Aldi has once again secured the title of the most budget-friendly supermarket for the month, based on the latest price analysis conducted by Which?. The study compared prices of a shopping list containing 89 items in February, revealing that the average cost at Aldi was £161.56 throughout the month.
Lidl followed closely behind, being only £1.19 more expensive with its list totaling £162.75. Asda claimed the third spot with a total of £181.06, while Tesco with a Clubcard came in fourth at £181.58.
The shopping list comprised a mix of branded and own-brand items, including popular products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
For a smaller selection of items, Waitrose emerged as the priciest option this month, averaging £217.02. This marked a notable difference of £55.46 compared to Aldi.
In a separate comparison, Which? analyzed prices for a longer list of 225 items, declaring Tesco as the most economical choice for Clubcard members. The extended shopping list at Tesco cost £580.35, making it £3.97 cheaper than Asda’s total of £584.32.
However, without a Clubcard, the shopping bill at Tesco rose to £629.25, which was £48.90 more expensive. Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this comparison due to their narrower product range in comparison to other supermarkets.
Waitrose also stood out as the priciest option overall, with the extended shopping list totaling £650.11, marking a £69.76 difference compared to Tesco with a Clubcard.
The analysis by Which? factored in special offer prices and loyalty prices where relevant, excluding multibuys. Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, highlighted Aldi’s affordability this month, emphasizing the ongoing competitive pricing between discounters like Lidl.
Sewraz also acknowledged Tesco’s value for customers preferring branded products through the Clubcard scheme, anticipating wider accessibility to such savings later in the year. The analysis underscores the potential for significant savings by being selective about where to shop amid continued financial pressures.
