“Longtime Morrisons Manager Sacked Over Shoplifting Altercation”

Published:

After dedicating almost three decades to Morrisons, a store manager, Sean Egan, found himself jobless following an altercation with a recurrent shoplifter who turned violent. Egan, aged 46, expressed his struggles after being dismissed from his long-held position at Morrisons in Aldridge, near Walsall, where he had been employed since the age of 17.

Egan recounted his attempt to apprehend a shoplifter trying to exit the supermarket with stolen items, emphasizing his responsibility to safeguard both staff and customers. Despite his efforts, a disciplinary inquiry resulted in his termination for not adhering to the company’s policy of deterrence without detention.

The incident escalated when the shoplifter became aggressive and spat at Egan as he tried to escort him out of the store. Egan, a resident of Wolverhampton, explained his actions of self-defense during the altercation that ensued, leading to his subsequent dismissal by Morrisons despite contacting the police for assistance.

The aftermath of the ordeal has taken a toll on Egan and his family, with him lamenting their precarious situation. He criticized Morrisons for the lack of support provided to staff facing shoplifting and violent individuals, feeling betrayed after his years of dedication to the company.

Morrisons refrained from commenting on individual cases but emphasized their commitment to addressing threats of shoplifting and violence in their stores while prioritizing the safety of their employees and customers. They highlighted the strict procedures in place to ensure the well-being of all involved and reiterated their focus on maintaining a safe environment at all times.
