Supermarket Showdown: M&S Mini Eggs Outshine Cadbury’s

Published:

Mini Eggs hold a special place in my heart. Luckily, they are only available around Easter, preventing me from overspending on my indulgence. The delightful pastel colors and satisfying crunch make them a top choice for Easter treats. Despite being a popular brand, they can be pricey and sometimes hard to find during the holiday season. To explore more affordable options, I decided to test various supermarket own-brand versions against the original.

Major supermarkets offer their own budget-friendly take on the beloved Easter treat, all at a lower cost than the authentic Mini Eggs. I purchased different packs from Aldi, Lidl, M&S, and Asda, eager to compare them for the first time.

In addition to the supermarket alternatives, I also bought a pack of Cadbury’s Mini Eggs for reference. While trying to match the pack sizes across stores, Aldi only had larger packets available, which I didn’t mind at all.

After sampling all the options, one brand stood out above the rest, surpassing even the original Mini Eggs. I’m planning to stock up on this particular brand before Easter arrives.

Starting with the Cadbury Mini Eggs, the familiar sugary aroma and delightful crunch never fail to impress. The smooth chocolate center is simply divine, making them a sought-after treat as Easter nears. Currently, the 80g packets are out of stock at Asda and Tesco but typically retail for around £2, equivalent to approximately £2.50 per 100g.

Moving on to Asda’s own-brand version, the milk chocolate mini eggs in an 80g pack cost just £1.12, making them a more affordable option at £1.40 per 100g compared to Cadbury. However, they lacked the same premium taste and scent, falling short of the original. They landed in the middle of my ranking, earning a score of 2.5/5.

The Mister Choc eggs, priced at £1.15 for 80g, were the second-cheapest option. Despite their initial texture, the taste was somewhat pleasant but still couldn’t rival the authentic Mini Eggs. I rated them one out of five.

Aldi and Lidl’s own versions, while not as hard as expected, didn’t offer a significant improvement in taste. The Choceur Mini Eggs from Aldi, priced at £3.39 for 256g or £1.32 per 100g, were also average in flavor. Although the chocolate was slightly bland, they weren’t unpleasant. For those seeking a rich and creamy mini egg experience, these might not be the best choice. I gave them a rating of two out of five.

Recently, M&S’s speckled egg biscuits and chocolate bars have been trending on social media. Intrigued, I tried their Mini Eggs for the first time and was impressed by their size and perfect chocolate-to-shell ratio. The filling melted in my mouth, making them addictive and possibly even better than the genuine Cadbury Mini Eggs. Priced at £1.79 for a 90g bag or £1.94 per 100g, these are a great alternative to Cadbury’s.

I am now eager to explore more of M&S’s speckled egg creations, and based on my experience with their Mini Eggs, they receive a five-star rating from me.
