Amazon Cracks Down on Illegal Streaming of Sky Sports

Published:

Amazon’s Fire TV Sticks, known for offering easy access to premium entertainment like movies and sports, are facing a crackdown on unauthorized streaming of channels such as Sky Sports. The company has announced plans to block unofficial apps facilitating access to pirated content.

An Amazon spokesperson highlighted the illegal nature of piracy and emphasized efforts to prevent it through collaboration with the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) to block apps enabling access to pirated content. Customers are already receiving warning messages on their screens, signaling the upcoming crackdown.

A recent report by AFTVnews revealed that launching suspicious apps triggers alerts warning users about unlicensed content access, with instructions to uninstall the flagged app. Although users can still access the apps, Amazon’s detection signals a potential ban in the future.

The timeline for the complete blocking initiative is yet to be confirmed, with European devices set to be affected first, followed by UK devices. While the crackdown aims to deter illegal streaming, concerns remain about the underlying cause – escalating subscription costs. Media analyst Paolo Pescatore welcomed the move as a step forward but cautioned about the financial burden on consumers due to rising fees and fragmented viewing experiences driven by broadcasters’ increased spending on live sports rights.
