Lawrence Okolie has suggested that a bicep injury may have been a factor in his positive drug test result.
The former cruiserweight and bridgerweight champion was set to face Tony Yoka in Paris on Saturday in his ongoing venture as a heavyweight.
A statement from his promoter, Queensberry, revealed that the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) notified them of an adverse finding from Okolie’s test conducted before the Paris event. Updates on the situation will follow.
Okolie took to social media to explain his side of the story, stating that he had an elbow injury on the same arm as his previous bicep injury. He emphasized his cooperation with authorities and expressed confidence in being cleared of any wrongdoing.
Okolie and Yoka both participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics, albeit in different weight categories. While Okolie did not secure a medal, Yoka clinched gold in the super-heavyweight division. Okolie later became a cruiserweight world champion before moving up to bridgerweight and eventually heavyweight.
In anticipation of his bout with Yoka, Okolie expressed his readiness at the heavyweight level, highlighting his comfort and strength in the division. He sees the fight as a significant opportunity for his career.
Reflecting on his upcoming opponent, Okolie acknowledged Yoka’s skills and experience but believed the momentum favored him for the fight.
