A young grizzly bear named Fitz at the Calgary Zoo left his habitat early one morning, triggering emergency response protocols. The zoo’s spokesperson, Cindy Antonello, stated that the animal care and security teams, along with the Calgary Police Service, quickly intervened. Fitz was safely immobilized and relocated without harm to anyone. The incident occurred before the zoo opened to the public, leading to a temporary closure of the Wild Canada area for assessment before reopening later in the day.
Antonello mentioned that a post-incident review would be conducted to understand the circumstances further. Staff Sgt. John Guigon of the Calgary Police Service assured that there was no threat to the public during the incident. He described the bear’s brief escapade as a tranquil event, with the bear eventually being tranquilized by zoo personnel. Fitz and his sibling Turner were orphaned cubs brought to the zoo after their mother’s unfortunate demise near Diamond Valley.
