Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community in the Island Lake region of eastern Manitoba, according to RCMP reports. The incident occurred on Wednesday, and the police were notified after the children were brought to Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station around 2 p.m. the following day.
A family member discovered the toddlers in the lake and promptly transported them to the nursing station with the assistance of First Nation safety officers. Despite efforts to save them, the boys were declared deceased upon arrival at the medical facility.
Authorities suspect that the boys wandered away from their residence and entered the nearby lake without any foul play involved. Alex McDougall, the grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin, expressed solidarity with the family and community following the heartbreaking loss of the two young members from Garden Hill Anisininew Nation.
McDougall mentioned that the family had taken precautions by constructing a fence to prevent direct access to the water. The entire community is in a state of shock and disbelief, with efforts underway to provide support and resources to the immediate family during this difficult time.
Garden Hill is located approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg. Tragically, this incident marks one of several drowning incidents in Manitoba in 2026, as confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito expressed the challenges of dealing with such tragedies, emphasizing the RCMP’s commitment to assisting the grieving family.
Hipolito extended his sympathies to the affected family and community, hoping that they find solace and strength to cope with the loss. The community is deeply saddened by the incident, with support being offered to help them navigate through this difficult period.
