Canada is aiming to secure spots for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as flag football makes its Olympic debut. The world championships in Germany this week offer the opportunity to claim two berths in each of the men’s and women’s tournaments, with the United States already guaranteed a spot as the host nation.
While winning at the world championships is not mandatory for Olympic qualification, teams would prefer to avoid the last-chance qualifier in 2028. Sixteen teams in both the men’s and women’s competitions are competing in group stages, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout rounds.
The Canadian women’s team, currently ranked fourth globally, will face tough competition from teams like Mexico and the United States. The men’s team, ranked 10th, will need strong performances to secure a spot at the Olympics. Notable players in the Canadian squads include former NFL tight end Antony Auclair and veteran defensive back Sabrina Gervais.
The flag football world championships can be live-streamed on CBC Gem and the CBC Sports website, offering fans a chance to witness the action unfold.
