A chaotic scene unfolded during the annual White House correspondents’ dinner when an armed individual breached the lobby near the ballroom, prompting the swift evacuation of Donald Trump. In the midst of the commotion, a Secret Service agent was shot at close range but survived thanks to his bulletproof vest, while attendees sought cover by diving under tables.
Although Trump emerged unharmed, he was hurried offstage as gunshots rang out. Law enforcement later identified the perpetrator as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, armed with a handgun, shotgun, and multiple knives. Describing the suspect as a “lone wolf whack job,” Trump addressed the incident at a subsequent press conference.
The incident transpired around 8:35 pm local time, sending guests into a frenzy as they were instructed to seek shelter. The Secret Service promptly intervened to protect the President and remove him from the stage.
Following the ordeal, Trump took to Truth Social, confirming the apprehension of the suspected gunman and commending the swift response of the Secret Service and law enforcement. Subsequent updates revealed the President’s decision to vacate the premises as per law enforcement’s advice, assuring the safety of the First Lady, Vice President, and Cabinet members.
CCTV footage shared by Trump depicted the suspect running past officers in the hotel lobby, where 2,500 guests were present. Additionally, the President released images showing the suspect’s detainment within the hotel premises.
In a later news conference held from the White House, Trump reiterated his characterization of the suspect as a “lone wolf whack job,” accompanied by FBI chief Kash Patel and Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche. Media outlets later identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from California.
Law enforcement activities extended to Torrance, California, where police were seen conducting a search at a residence linked to the suspect. The US Attorney for the District of Columbia announced plans to formally charge the suspect in court on Monday with several offenses, including using a firearm during a crime of violence.
The incident marked the third threat to the President’s safety since 2024, underscoring the need for heightened security measures. Trump emphasized the importance of safeguarding society against such threats, emphasizing the resilience of the nation.
