Android users are being cautioned to remain alert for a new alarming cyber threat. A recent attack, named DroidLock, poses a significant risk as it locks phones upon infection, demanding a ransom to avoid permanent file deletion.
The security team at Zimperium discovered the threat, primarily impacting Android users in parts of Europe. DroidLock is being spread through malicious websites promoting fake applications that mimic legitimate software. Once installed, the malware seizes control of devices and monitors screen unlock codes.
Hackers can alter the unlock code and lock users out, prompting a ransom demand or file deletion threat. Zimperium highlighted that DroidLock functions as ransomware, spreading through phishing sites, and can acquire app lock credentials, taking complete control of compromised devices.
While DroidLock has not yet reached the UK, Android users are advised to remain cautious. It is crucial to only download apps from official sources like Google’s Play Store. Users should verify developers’ identities before sideloading software from websites and avoid suspicious downloads.
