U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the Trump administration will not tolerate any retaliatory actions from Canada in response to the latest tariff threat. Greer emphasized that the U.S. is safeguarding its domestic supply chains and implementing tariffs globally, not singling out Canada. He made it clear that any country retaliating against the U.S. would face consequences.
Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s warning to impose a significant 50% tariff on numerous Canadian products from August 19 onwards, in addition to existing sector-specific tariffs. Greer described the ongoing talks with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as positive and characterized them as productive.
Industry insiders familiar with the negotiations disclosed that Canada views the August 19 deadline as critical, indicating that further talks might not proceed if the tariffs are imposed. Greer reiterated the U.S.’ commitment to executing President Trump’s trade agenda and expressed willingness to work with Canada if it aligns with American interests.
Regarding the upcoming tariff deadline, Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Trump will be presented with options. Carney has emphasized Canada’s goal of addressing not only the proposed 50% tariff but also the existing tariffs on sectors such as automobiles and steel. A recent U.S. proposal suggested reducing some sector-specific tariffs, although not to the extent desired by the Canadian side.
Trump’s tariff threat was prompted by grievances over provincial alcohol bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs. Sources familiar with the negotiations indicated that Canada is open to addressing these concerns. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent deal and urged the government to stand firm on dairy negotiations, citing concerns about potential concessions.
Greer highlighted various trade issues between the U.S. and Canada, particularly emphasizing alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs. Former Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Frank McKenna challenged Greer’s stance, asserting that Canada was merely responding to unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S., defending its right to retaliate against such actions.
