A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, but Paul Langlois admits that he still hasn’t fully come to terms with it. The guitarist expressed his disbelief over the 10-year milestone during an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on “The National” last Thursday.
Reflecting on the emotional night, Langlois emphasized the significance of their last show and the impact it had on fans. The concert, held at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre (now known as Slush Puppi Place), marked a poignant farewell as lead singer Gord Downie bid adieu to the audience, performing iconic hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the final time.
Following a successful career that spanned over three decades and included the release of 13 studio albums since their inception in 1984, The Tragically Hip embarked on their farewell tour in 2016. The tour culminated in a memorable hometown show on August 20, 2016. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, sadly led to his passing just over a year later at the age of 53.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the band’s final concert, CBC will be airing a rebroadcast of the performance on Saturday. Guitarist Rob Baker expressed gratitude for the continued support from fans and emphasized that, for him, the event is more about remembrance than celebration, marking the end of a beloved career.
Langlois recalled feeling uneasy and overwhelmed before the final show but found solace when Downie’s positive energy lifted his spirits during the soundcheck. Baker, who was focused on supporting Downie throughout the tour, highlighted the emotional challenges he faced while containing his feelings to fulfill his role on stage.
Despite initial concerns about Downie’s health affecting the performances, the band members were pleasantly surprised by his physical improvement during the farewell tour. Langlois admitted that they underestimated the impact of the final show, only fully realizing its significance in the days that followed.
While Baker and Langlois confirmed that The Tragically Hip will not reunite, they recently released a new album titled “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from the 2016 tour. Baker acknowledged the healing power of music, recounting a personal moment where music helped him process his emotions and grieve.
