“Studio Reset: New Edmonton Indie Devs Carve Path in Gaming Industry”

Published:

A fresh independent game development studio has emerged, tapping into expertise gained from top gaming companies to navigate the ever-evolving gaming landscape. Hailing from Edmonton, Studio Reset comprises a trio of game industry veterans, including Creative Director Kaelin Lavallee, who departed Bioware in 2015 to explore different aspects of game development before co-founding Studio Reset alongside Kris Schoneberg and Francis Lacuna earlier this year.

The trend of seasoned developers venturing into independent game creation is evident in other Canadian indie game ventures like Ambrosia Sky from Toronto’s Soft Rains studio, boasting talents from Ubisoft and Bethesda, and Reply All by Toronto’s Peculiar Path, with team members who previously contributed to games such as Assassin’s Creed and Red Dead Redemption.

While embarking on solo endeavors in creative fields, particularly the competitive gaming domain, carries inherent risks due to the saturation of new releases annually, it also offers developers the freedom to unleash their creative potential as major studios become increasingly risk-averse in pursuit of blockbuster hits.

Studio Reset’s inaugural game, “The Eventide,” promises a supernatural mystery experience set in a “neon-noir” Canadian backdrop, drawing inspiration from iconic TV show “The X-Files” and narrative-driven puzzle games like “Case of the Golden Idol.” Players will select a duo of investigators from a diverse pool to delve into a series of unsolved cases, each investigator presenting distinct interpretations akin to Mulder and Scully from “The X-Files,” challenging players to unravel the truth.

Paul Fogolin, president of the Entertainment Software Association of Canada, underscores the symbiotic relationship between AAA and indie studios, highlighting how large studios contribute expertise and resources, while independent developers foster innovation and experimental ideas, enriching the gaming industry.

For developers like Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels, transitioning to indie development allowed a return to hands-on game creation, steering away from extensive meetings prevalent in larger studios. The gamble paid off for Red Barrels, with titles like “Outlast” garnering success and propelling the studio’s growth. Despite the challenges, indie studios represent a beacon of creativity and resilience in an industry witnessing significant upheavals, with job cuts and studio closures reshaping the gaming landscape.

As the gaming industry undergoes transformations, the rise of indie studios not only reflects a pursuit of creative freedom but also a response to the shifting dynamics within established gaming corporations. These indie ventures, fueled by passion and dedication, aim to carve their niche in the vast gaming market, relying on community support and innovative game concepts to sustain their presence and foster long-term growth.
