Snooker world mourns the loss of beloved commentator John Virgo

Legendary snooker commentator John Virgo has passed away at the age of 79. Virgo, a prominent figure in the snooker world, recently concluded his final commentary at the BBC during the Masters tournament. Hailing from Salford, he had a successful playing career, clinching the UK Championship title in 1979. His demise occurred in Spain, where he resided.

The sad news was confirmed by World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis through a social media post, expressing his sorrow at the loss of the beloved ‘JV’ John Virgo. Virgo’s family, including Rosie and Brooke-Leah, shared their grief with the public, highlighting his dedication to entertaining audiences until the very end.

Tributes poured in from various snooker personalities and organizations, with the BBC and World Snooker Tour expressing condolences and honoring Virgo’s legacy. Ronnie O’Sullivan, a fellow snooker icon, and Stephen Hendry, a seven-time world champion, shared heartfelt messages, reminiscing about their time spent with Virgo.

Virgo’s impact on the sport extended beyond his playing days, as he transitioned into a renowned commentator, known for his signature catchphrase: “Where’s the cue ball going?” He also co-hosted the popular BBC show, Big Break, with Jim Davidson. Colleagues and friends, including Shaun Murphy and Neil Robertson, praised Virgo’s contributions to snooker and expressed their sadness at his passing.
