UK to Restrict Trump’s Access to Bases for Iran Strikes

Published:

The UK may deny Donald Trump access to British military bases for potential strikes on Iranian power facilities and infrastructure, following the US President’s warning of potential catastrophic consequences. Trump set a deadline for Tehran to cease its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, threatening severe military action if the ultimatum is not met.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office indicated that the UK’s assistance to American military actions is limited to collective self-defense purposes, emphasizing a cautious approach to granting permission for strikes on civilian targets. Previously, UK approval was granted for defensive operations on specific Iranian missile sites at RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia, subject to case-by-case evaluation of US requests.

Regarding the possibility of UK assets being utilized for attacks on infrastructure, the Prime Minister’s spokesperson refrained from detailed comments on allied operations but reiterated the existing agreement for US use of UK bases for regional defense, specifically targeting missile threats in the Strait of Hormuz.

Wes Streeting, a Cabinet minister, praised Starmer’s decision to maintain British neutrality in the Iran conflict, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts over military escalation. The Health Secretary reiterated the UK’s stance of non-involvement in the conflict, refraining from labeling potential US actions as war crimes.

Streeting criticized the inconsistent positions of Tory leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, contrasting their hawkish leanings with what he deemed as the Prime Minister’s prudent and rational approach to international crises.

In parallel developments, military officials from over 30 nations convened to discuss strategies for reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage currently obstructed by Tehran’s actions. The UK Ministry of Defence clarified its authorization for US defensive operations from British bases, aimed at neutralizing immediate missile threats to British interests in the region.

As tensions persist, Trump reiterated his willingness to target Iranian civilian assets, brushing off concerns of potential war crimes. The UK remains committed to its defensive stance and urges diplomatic resolutions to the crisis.
