“Nick Reiner Charged with Parents’ Murder in L.A.”

Published:

A grand jury in Los Angeles County has formally charged Nick Reiner with murder in the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, and has additionally alleged that he lay in wait before the attack. The indictment was issued on July 20 after a period of secret deliberations and was made public on Wednesday, where 32-year-old Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty.

The tragic incident occurred on December 14 when renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were fatally stabbed in their Brentwood home in Los Angeles. Nick Reiner was swiftly apprehended and formally charged two days following the incident.

The grand jury’s indictment marks a significant progression towards a trial, bypassing the preliminary hearing process in California where evidence is publicly presented. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed the deep betrayal felt by the victims’ loved ones and emphasized the pursuit of justice through the legal process.

The unsealed indictment indicates that Nick Reiner is eligible for the death penalty due to the lying in wait accusation and other circumstances. However, prosecutors have not disclosed their decision regarding seeking the death penalty. The document mentions the use of a knife in the crime, matching previous reports of the couple’s cause of death.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, many details surrounding the case, including motives and specifics of the incident, remain undisclosed to the public. The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner expressed a desire to release the autopsy reports but has been restricted by a court order.

Amidst the legal battle, Nick Reiner is pursuing funds from a trust established by his parents for his defense, asserting that the trustees have unjustly denied access to the funds. The trust reportedly holds at least $1.5 million US in assets, but precise details have not been shared with Reiner.

In efforts to bolster his defense, Nick Reiner seeks to re-engage high-profile defense attorney Alan Jackson, who initially represented him before a public defender took over due to funding issues. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for the upcoming week.

The L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, representing Reiner, refrained from commenting on the recent indictment. The legal process in California allows prosecutors to choose between a preliminary hearing or a grand jury indictment conducted in secret, with the latter route chosen in this case.

Rob Reiner, known for his contributions as an actor and director, had an illustrious career that spanned both television and film. His son Nick, a co-writer for the film “Being Charlie,” shared a bond with his father through their collaboration in the entertainment industry. The devastating loss of the Reiner family has left a profound impact on their loved ones and the entertainment community.
