Israeli Airstrikes in Lebanon Leave 11 Dead

Published:

Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals on Saturday, marking some of the most lethal attacks since the fragile truce between Israel and Hezbollah began in June. Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state news agency reported that one airstrike, targeting a residence on the outskirts of Ansar village, claimed the lives of seven individuals, including three children, and injured two others. Another strike in Deir al-Zahrani village resulted in four fatalities and 17 injuries.

A “framework agreement” was established between Israel and the Lebanese government on June 26, outlining a plan for Israeli forces to retreat from southern Lebanon in exchange for the disarmament of Hezbollah, a militant group backed by Iran. The agreement also aims to pave the way for a potential peace deal between the two nations, which technically remain in a state of war nearly 80 years after Israel’s inception. Despite this, Hezbollah has declined direct negotiations and was not party to the agreement.

The recent airstrikes, occurring two months post the truce, mark the deadliest incidents since the ceasefire was implemented. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the Israeli strikes, asserting that they instill fear among residents and impede efforts to stabilize the region. He emphasized that the victims of the airstrikes were not military targets and underscored the Lebanese state’s responsibility to address military infrastructure within the country.

More than 4,000 individuals have been killed in the region due to Israeli strikes thus far. The Israeli military defended its actions, stating that the strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure were in response to a prior incident involving Israeli soldiers. Hezbollah, in turn, called on the Lebanese government to cease the aggression and cautioned against pursuing direct talks with Israel, accusing the U.S. of complicity in Israeli actions.

The ongoing discord between Israel and Hezbollah has led to sporadic violence, including recent casualties on both sides. Despite several rounds of talks and international efforts to broker peace, significant challenges persist in achieving lasting stability in the region.
