The Montreal Roses emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over AFC Toronto in Northern Super League action on Sunday, thanks to Marie-Yasmine Alidou’s decisive penalty goal in the 55th minute. Elyse Bennett also contributed with her ninth goal of the season, securing the victory for the second-place Roses (9-4-3) in their first match under interim head coach Maryse Bard-Martel.
Although Shelina Zadorsky seemed to equalize for third-place Toronto (7-5-4) in the 68th minute, her goal was disallowed due to an offside call. Roses goalkeeper Anna Karpenko put up a stellar performance, facing 20 shots, including nine on target, to secure a clean sheet.
On the other side, Toronto keeper Sabrina D’Angelo faced seven shots, five of which were on target. The Roses played their first game following the dismissal of head coach Robert Rositoiu after a surprising 1-0 defeat to semi-pro side Simcoe County in the W Canadian Championship.
