A cutting-edge British Type 45 destroyer, HMS Dragon, is steaming towards the Eastern Mediterranean amidst escalating tensions in the Iran crisis. Regarded as one of the most advanced warships globally, Dragon is part of a fleet of six formidable warships. The Type 45, which replaced the older Type 42 vessels, boasts superior combat capabilities, with just one of these destroyers capable of striking more targets than five of its predecessors.
Equipped with a range of sophisticated weaponry, including a 4.5-inch Mark 8 naval gun that can fire 25 rounds per minute, Dragon is a formidable force in the Royal Navy’s arsenal. Additionally, it features two 30mm DSM Mark 2 guns, two 20mm Phalanx CIWS guns, two 7.62mm miniguns, and six general-purpose machine guns.
The ship’s complement of Wildcat helicopters, stationed at RAF Akrotiri, adds to its firepower, carrying Sting Ray torpedoes, a 12.7mm cabin-mounted machine gun, as well as Martlet and Sea Venom missiles. The Martlet missiles are particularly effective against small drones, offering enhanced defense capabilities.
As the UK bolsters its defenses in the region, Rear Admiral Chris Parry criticized the deployment of HMS Dragon as “tokenism,” citing the existing protection in the Eastern Mediterranean. He suggested that the ship could be more strategically deployed, potentially towards the Gulf region, given the current naval presence in the area.
Despite the criticisms, HMS Dragon’s 190-strong crew operates state-of-the-art radar systems and Sea Viper missiles, ensuring effective defense against incoming threats. With a top speed of 27 knots and a long operational range, the destroyer is well-equipped to counter saturation attacks and swarms of drones.
Featuring advanced radar capabilities, including the Sea Viper missiles and SAMPSON AESA radar, the Type 45 destroyer can detect and intercept incoming threats efficiently. With a focus on air-defense, the ship’s arsenal aims to neutralize potential aerial and missile threats in the region.
In conjunction with Wildcat helicopters and their advanced sensor systems, the UK military aims to maintain a robust defense network, minimizing the risk of breaches.
