In a swift three-hour operation, five bodies were recovered from the sea by crew members aboard a cruise ship. Passengers aboard the Sapphire Princess were informed of a turnaround after the sighting of an orange object, later identified as a lifejacket, in the western Mediterranean Sea at 6pm on April 21.
Video footage captured the retrieval of a male body, clad in a purple top and black shorts, who was carefully transferred onto the ship after examination by medical personnel. Subsequently, a second body, marked by an orange life jacket, was brought on board at 7:47pm. Three additional bodies were rescued from the water before the captain declared the recovery mission successful, totaling five individuals.
An anonymous passenger recounted the somber experience, expressing shock and sadness at the event believed to involve migrants. The cruise ship, positioned between Spain and North Africa, later docked in Cartagena, Spain, on April 22. The vessel, carrying more than three thousand passengers, embarked on a two-week journey from Italy on April 19, with its final stop scheduled in Copenhagen, Denmark, on May 3.
Princess Cruises issued a statement confirming the incident, commending the crew’s prompt response and collaboration with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in recovering the deceased individuals. The cruise line extended condolences for the loss, emphasizing that the individuals were not affiliated with the ship’s guests or crew.
