“From Disillusionment to Discovery: Finding Home in Vancouver”

Published:

Caitlyn Moony, a Johannesburg native who relocated to Vancouver in 2018, shared her journey and reflections on the city that she once called home. Despite initial excitement and high expectations, her experience in Vancouver did not meet her idealized vision. Struggling with job opportunities, housing challenges, and a sense of isolation, Moony found herself disillusioned with the city. The lack of a supportive community and the relentless rain further added to her feelings of disconnect.

As time passed, Moony’s perspective shifted as she embraced the quieter, more contemplative lifestyle of the West Coast. Moving to London temporarily provided her with the vibrant energy she craved, but she ultimately realized that Vancouver had quietly shaped her into a different person—one who valued introspection and tranquility over hustle and bustle. Returning to Vancouver after her London stint, Moony sought reconciliation with the city, acknowledging its imperfections while yearning for a sense of belonging and acceptance.

Moony’s story reflects the complex relationship many individuals have with the cities they inhabit, highlighting the evolution of personal identity and the quest for a place to call home. Through her experiences, she discovered that true connection and fulfillment often require patience, understanding, and a willingness to embrace change.
