“Devastating Earthquake Strikes Flores, Indonesia”

Published:

Thousands of individuals in Flores, Indonesia, were awaiting assistance on Monday following a devastating earthquake that resulted in a death toll of at least 68 people, with over 200 others injured and numerous homes and structures damaged.

Residents of Flores island in East Nusa Tenggara province were in mourning and anxiously anticipating aid to reach communities that remained isolated due to the destructive quake. The aftermath of the earthquake included collapsed buildings, homes reduced to rubble, and roads obstructed by debris like trees and boulders.

Rasyid Jafar, a resident of the severely affected area in Manggarai regency, described his house as now just a pile of debris, emphasizing the urgent need for essentials such as food, medicine, and clean water.

President Prabowo Subianto, during Indonesia’s Independence Day ceremony in Jakarta, called for prayers for the quake-affected individuals in East Nusa Tenggara and across the nation. The disaster caused significant damage, impacting over 4,500 homes, displacing around 19,000 people to temporary shelters, and injuring 213 individuals. Health facilities, schools, and places of worship were also among the damaged structures.

Authorities reported numerous aftershocks, with residents feeling approximately 50 of them. The provincial governor declared a 14-day state of emergency to address the crisis effectively.

In the midst of the devastation, thousands of people in Flores sought refuge under tarpaulin tents outside their destroyed homes, wary of potential aftershocks. The island bore witness to widespread destruction, including blocked roads, landslides sending massive boulders downhill, and numerous shattered or severely damaged residences.

Military and police personnel, supported by aircraft, were working to distribute aid to the affected regions, though logistical challenges posed delays in reaching some communities. Emergency field hospitals were set up in Ruteng to cater to the injured, as local medical facilities were also impacted by the quake.

Aid workers managed to reach the remote Palue Island after a challenging journey through landslide-affected terrain, providing much-needed assistance to the residents stranded there. Indonesia, located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to seismic activities due to its geological positioning, making it susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The earthquake on Flores island is a stark reminder of Indonesia’s vulnerability to natural disasters, with past incidents like the devastating 1992 earthquake and tsunami on the island. The nation has faced significant tragedies, including the 2004 Sumatra quake-triggered tsunami and the Sulawesi earthquake-induced tsunami in 2018.
