US President Donald Trump faced a new threat as gunshots caused chaos at the White House correspondents’ dinner on Saturday evening. The incident led to the evacuation of Trump and First Lady Melania from the Washington Hilton event.
Throughout his presidency and re-election campaigns, Trump has encountered several assassination attempts, including a shooting at a Pennsylvania rally and ricin poisoning incidents. The latest shooting at the correspondents’ dinner saw the evacuation of not just Trump but also Vice President JD Vance and other Cabinet members.
Amidst the chaos, Secret Service agents swiftly responded, with one reportedly being shot but saved by his bulletproof vest. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, is set to face formal charges on Monday after allegedly infiltrating the venue armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives.
In a separate incident in July 2024, Trump was seriously wounded during a rally in Pennsylvania when 20-year-old Thomas Crooks shot him in the upper right ear with an AR-15-style rifle. The shooter, quickly neutralized by the Secret Service, also caused casualties among rally attendees.
Following these events, Trump made a resilient public appearance at the 2024 Republic National Convention, showcasing his determination to continue despite the security threats. The recent incidents have highlighted significant security lapses, with parallels drawn to previous historical attempts on presidents’ lives.
Notably, another attempt on Trump’s life occurred in September 2024 when Ryan Wesley Routh was apprehended near Trump International Golf Club in Florida with an SKS rifle. Routh’s failed attempt led to his conviction on multiple federal charges, resulting in a life sentence and additional years behind bars.
Trump’s security challenges extend to incidents like the failed pistol grab by Michael Steven Sandford in 2016 and the ricin poisoning attempts in 2018 and 2020, showing a persistent risk to his safety. Despite these threats, Trump has continued his public engagements, displaying a resolute stance against those seeking harm.
