A lone individual armed with multiple weapons attempted to breach a Washington dinner event attended by former President Donald Trump, leading to a swift evacuation by secret service agents. The incident occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, causing chaos as attendees were forced to react to the unfolding situation.
During the altercation, one officer was shot but fortunately protected by a bulletproof vest and subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, was carrying both a shotgun and a handgun at the time of the incident. Reports suggest that he was a guest at the Washington Hilton hotel, the venue for the dinner.
Following the incident, President Trump addressed the media, describing the suspect as a “lone wolf whack job.” He commended the swift response of the secret service agents and emphasized that the suspect did not come close to breaching the security perimeter around the ballroom where he was seated.
Trump also expressed shock at the events that transpired and praised the unity displayed by those present during the incident. Mayor Muriel Bowser stated that there was no indication of any additional suspects involved in the incident.
Acting attorney general Todd Blanche highlighted the bravery of law enforcement officers in handling the situation, promising that justice would be served. Trump announced that the event would be rescheduled within the next 30 days.
The Washington Hilton’s history includes a previous attempted presidential assassination in 1981 when former President Ronald Reagan was shot outside the hotel by John Hinckley Jr, leading to increased security measures at the property.
