Frankie Dettori concluded his illustrious career on a high note by clinching a major victory in Brazil, triumphing in the first part of the nation’s Triple Crown series. Initially planning to retire during Champions Day at Ascot in October 2023, Dettori had a change of heart and extended his racing career in the United States.
The 55-year-old officially announced last November that he would retire after the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, culminating with a farewell tour in South America that concluded at Gavea racecourse in Rio de Janeiro. During his final races, Dettori secured two wins, first on Speak Alpha and then on Bet You Can in the Brazilian 2,000 Guineas, known as the Grande Premio Estado do Rio De Janeiro.
The victory allowed Dettori to execute his signature flying dismount celebration one last time. Reflecting on his remarkable career, he expressed gratitude and emotion, stating, “I never expected to win a Group 1 on my last day. It’s been brilliant. I’ve had a beautiful career and I’m thankful to leave in good health.”
Despite retiring as a jockey, Dettori revealed plans to stay involved in the racing world. He has accepted a position as a global ambassador for Amo Racing, a role he embraced after riding his final British Group 1 on King Of Steel in the Champion Stakes.
In a heartfelt message to his fans on social media, Dettori acknowledged the profound impact racing had on his life, spanning nearly four decades of dedication to the sport. He expressed gratitude to his family, colleagues, and supporters for their unwavering backing throughout his journey, concluding with a heartfelt appreciation for the fans who helped him realize his childhood dream.
