“Man Charged with Vandalism at Saskatoon Synagogue”

Published:

A 31-year-old man from Dundurn, Saskatchewan, is facing charges of mischief in connection with vandalism at a synagogue in Saskatoon, as reported by city police. The incident occurred on August 1 at the Congregation Agudas Israel synagogue during a prayer service. The man allegedly threw eggs at several vehicles and parts of the building. Surveillance footage from outside the synagogue helped identify the suspect, who later turned himself in to the police following public tips.

The man has been charged with three counts of mischief under $5,000 and was released on conditions pending his first court appearance. While the Saskatoon police hate crimes unit was involved in the investigation, the suspect is not currently facing any hate crime charges. Superintendent James Oliver clarified that in Canada, ‘hate crime’ is a broad term and not a specific charge under the Criminal Code.

Although the charges were based on the available evidence at the time, they may be subject to amendment by the prosecution if further evidence supports it. Rabbi Claudio Jodorkovsky expressed concern over the vandalism, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of the Jewish community in Saskatoon. Statistics Canada reports that in 2024, 70% of police-reported hate crimes targeting religious groups were aimed at the Jewish community.
