It has been 65 years since the Berlin Wall abruptly divided a city and country.
On August 13, 1961, over 10,000 police and army personnel initiated the construction of the wall. This barrier sliced through Berlin, creating a divide between East and West Germany, separating streets, neighborhoods, families, and political ideologies.
Prior to its collapse 28 years later, at least 140 individuals lost their lives due to the wall, including escapees, bystanders, and border guards.
“No one could have foreseen that it would stand for 28 years,” remarked Hartmut Richter, whose family was stranded in the East on that fateful Sunday.
In 1966, Richter managed to flee to West Berlin by swimming across a frigid river, later aiding 33 people in escaping East Germany in the trunk of his car.
Now, after more than six decades, Richter views his fight for freedom not just as a memory but as a cautionary tale.
“I worry about the freedom we enjoy here.”
This freedom could be severely tested in the upcoming state elections, with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party poised for significant gains.
Experts suggest that the AfD has effectively exploited deep-rooted resentments between East and West Germany, positioning itself as the defender of East German identity while advocating for radical policies challenging Germany’s post-war democratic norms.
Recent research, including a study by DIW Berlin, also correlates the AfD’s rise to economic disparities, demographic shifts, and collective grievances in the eastern regions of the country.
“It’s ironic that while we discuss reunification in Germany and the idea of becoming a unified nation again, we now have a party that is actively dividing German society,” noted Justus Bender, a political analyst and journalist specializing in the AfD.
