“Groundbreaking Liver Regeneration Technology Makes History”

A 64-year-old man from Quebec has made history in North America by being the first recipient of a regenerated liver, thanks to a groundbreaking technology that could potentially increase the availability of transplantable livers by dozens in its initial year. Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, had been grappling with liver issues for approximately 15 years, which eventually led to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Prior to his liver transplant surgery, Landry received surprising news from his doctor that his new liver had been regenerated using an innovative machine, utilized for the first time at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) in Montreal. Describing it as akin to a gift received at Christmas, Landry expressed gratitude for the technology called Liver Assist, which enables doctors to treat and evaluate a donated liver outside the body before transplantation. This technology allowed Landry to receive an organ that might have been considered too risky for conventional use.

Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist at CHUM, spearheaded the project and conducted Landry’s transplant operation. The Liver Assist system involves connecting a donated liver to a machine that circulates an oxygen-rich fluid through the organ, potentially reversing damage caused by oxygen deprivation while outside the body. The technology then allows doctors to switch to a blood-based solution to assess the liver’s functionality in conditions resembling the human body.

According to Hénault, the technology could enhance the number of available livers for transplantation, with estimations suggesting an additional 20 to 24 livers could become viable for transplant in the initial year of implementation. This number is anticipated to increase as the technology becomes more widespread. Hénault emphasized the potential to assist more patients awaiting liver transplants on the transplant list.

Studies have indicated that the technology may reduce complications, reoperations, and hospital stays for suitable patients. Landry’s successful transplant was evident immediately post-operation, with positive bloodwork results surpassing expectations. Hénault attributed the transplant’s success to the machine’s assistance.

Landry’s recovery progress has been exceptional, and he looks forward to returning to his family and horses in Gaspésie after his stay in Montreal. He hopes his experience will inspire conversations about organ donation, highlighting the critical role of donated organs in life-saving procedures. Landry emphasized the importance of organ donation, stating that even with advanced technology, the absence of donated organs impedes the transplant process.
