When I journey, I prioritize exploring eateries, cafes, and bakeries over traditional sightseeing. The most memorable aspect of my trips is sampling new cuisines, with some of my cherished moments revolving around delicious dishes I’ve savored. (The real challenge lies in building up an appetite between meals, but that’s where iconic landmarks come in handy.)

For food enthusiasts, road trips offer a perfect blend: extensive coverage, flexible scheduling for impromptu dining reservations, and the freedom to stop for alluring roadside treats (hello, farm-fresh produce stands!).

However, executing this requires thorough preparation. Through my travels, I’ve refined my strategy for discovering top-notch dining experiences. To assist you in identifying the most delectable stops on your summer road excursions, I’m sharing my methodology.

Conducting In-Depth Research and Cross-Referencing

Upon finalizing my travel destination, I adopt a three-pronged research approach to unearth culinary gems. Rest assured, it’s a straightforward process that can be completed in under thirty minutes.

Initially, I conduct an online search for credible articles and dining recommendations in the area (consult websites like CBC, Frommer’s, Maclean’s, Condé Nast Traveler, and Eater). This initial exploration provides a broad overview of the destination’s culinary scene and its renowned specialties.

Subsequently, I scour TikTok and Instagram using search terms like “best Halifax restaurants,” “top food spots in Halifax,” or “Halifax cuisine.” For specific preferences, such as “finest lobster in P.E.I.” or “premier Jewish deli in Montreal,” targeted searches yield tailored results.

Lastly, I solicit recommendations through personal contacts via texts or social media posts. Nothing beats a suggestion from a trusted source.

After compiling this information, I identify commonalities, focusing on restaurants or dishes repeatedly endorsed by diverse sources, which often leads to delightful culinary discoveries. I’ve stumbled upon exceptional deep-fried chicken wings at Phnom Penh in Vancouver through this method, a memory I cherish to this day.

Striking a Balance with Ratings Evaluation

While not an exact science, assessing a restaurant’s Google ratings can offer insights into the dining experience. Yelp and Tripadvisor are valuable resources, but I prefer Google due to its extensive database.

Typically, I avoid establishments rated below 4.1 stars. Although lower ratings do not necessarily imply subpar food, I prefer to minimize the risk of disappointment while traveling.

Additionally, I consider the number of ratings a restaurant has received:

  • 10,000 or more ratings = popular tourist spot. While these venues may offer delicious fare or a pleasant ambiance, caution is advised.

  • 5,000-
