Ministers have been informed that online ‘mega-brothels’ offering women for sex are likened to “crime scenes” and are linked to “the largest human trafficking operations in modern UK history.” Labour MP Tracy Gilbert has urged the closure of adult services sites, such as Adultwork and Vivastreet, which operate legally but are accused of being involved in extensive exploitation.
During a Westminster Hall debate, Ms. Gilbert emphasized the need to shut down these websites, labeling them as perpetrators of human trafficking in Scotland and throughout the UK. She stressed the urgent action required, stating that these platforms are essentially crime scenes that must be eradicated to ensure justice for the victims.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Ms. Gilbert pointed out that these online mega-brothels are fueling widespread sex trafficking and exploitation across the country. She called for immediate criminal investigations into the individuals running pimping websites, as these offenses carry severe penalties, including a maximum life sentence.
Furthermore, she criticized the authorities for their past engagements with adult services sites, emphasizing the need for a review of laws in England and Wales to combat sexual exploitation effectively. The government is currently reassessing prostitution laws to address the issue more comprehensively.
In a report by the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner (IASC) in February, the adult services sites were condemned as facilitators of abuse and exploitation. Commissioner Eleanor Lyons called for stringent actions against these platforms, emphasizing the need to protect vulnerable individuals and hold criminals accountable.
Responding to the allegations, Vivastreet stated that they adhere to regulatory standards and prioritize safety by employing various measures to detect and remove potentially exploitative content. They work closely with law enforcement agencies to address suspicious activities on their platform.
