Britain’s nuclear-armed submarines’ locations are highly classified. A Vanguard-Class submarine, part of the nuclear deterrent fleet, is always on patrol, ready to launch Trident missiles under the Prime Minister’s orders. Only a select few onboard know its route, and its position remains undisclosed during its mission.
Operating silently beneath the waves, the submarine receives limited communications to evade detection by potential adversaries. Recently, The Mirror had a unique opportunity to join the Prime Minister on a visit to a returning submarine after a 206-day deployment, codenamed “Day Zero.” The operation was so secretive that it was referred to as “story X” beforehand, with only a handful of colleagues aware of the mission.
During the early morning hours, the PM and The Mirror’s representative embarked on a boat journey in darkness to reach the surfaced submarine off the Scottish coast. The vessel was flanked by military vessels and armed commandos as they approached. Upon boarding, the crew, who had been submerged for months, greeted them.
Exploring the submarine’s interior revealed various compartments, including the communications center and control room equipped with sophisticated technology. Notably, a secure safe held a letter from the PM detailing actions in the event of a catastrophic scenario.
The crew, comprising 160 members, work in shifts enduring long periods without sunlight. They rely on artificial lighting, SAD lamps, and vitamin D supplements to maintain their well-being. The routine onboard revolves around scheduled meals, exercise areas, and a sense of camaraderie within the confined living quarters.
Despite the challenges and isolation, submariners remain dedicated to their duty, often receiving brief messages from families without the ability to respond. The sacrifices made by these individuals and their loved ones underscore the immense commitment required for extended submarine deployments.
