Contrary to popular belief that the liquid rule was a response to the 9/11 attacks in 2001, it was actually implemented in 2006 after the Metropolitan Police uncovered a potential threat. Following this discovery, hand luggage was temporarily banned on flights, requiring all items to be checked for security purposes.
Although the brief ban on carry-on luggage was lifted after a few days, the 100ml liquid rule has persisted for over two decades. This restriction was introduced to prevent terrorists from smuggling liquid explosives onto planes disguised within everyday objects, aiming to thwart large-scale destructive incidents.
Recent advancements in technology have prompted plans to update regulations, with some UK airports already allowing passengers to carry up to two liters of liquids in their hand luggage without removing them. However, not all UK airports have adopted these changes yet, as some are still in the process of implementing new scanning equipment.
While certain airports like Heathrow, Edinburgh, Belfast, and Birmingham have abandoned the 100ml rule, others such as Luton and Manchester still adhere to it, despite allowing liquids to remain in cabin bags. Most airports do not limit the number of liquid bottles passengers can carry, but it is advisable to check each airport’s specific rules on their website.
The transition to a more lenient liquid policy at airports is attributed to the introduction of advanced CT scanners, although the rollout of these scanners has faced delays. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed about evolving airport security guidelines and regulations to ensure smooth travel experiences.
