Donald Trump shared Melania’s alarming reaction when a shooter disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, armed with guns and knives, stormed the Washington Hilton on Saturday night.
Although the president escaped unharmed after being rushed off the stage, the armed individual, identified as a hotel guest, was apprehended and was scheduled for a court appearance on Monday. Authorities indicated that the suspect acted alone in the shooting incident, but they did not disclose the intended target or motive.
Trump recounted that Melania was the first to perceive the danger, describing the noise as disturbing. Despite initially mistaking the sound for a tray dropping, he acknowledged the seriousness upon realizing it was a gunshot. The president expressed shock at the event, emphasizing the swift reactions of some individuals compared to others.
During a White House press briefing shortly after the incident, Trump reflected on the unsettling nature of such occurrences. He recounted the moment he and Melania heard the noise, highlighting her awareness of the situation. Video footage posted by Trump on Truth Social captured the suspect evading security barriers as agents pursued him.
An officer sustained a gunshot wound to a bullet-resistant vest but was recovering, while the gunman was subdued without injuries and taken to a hospital for evaluation. Allen was arrested and faces firearm-related charges, including assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon.
The shooting unfolded near the event’s ballroom, disrupting the annual journalism-focused occasion that celebrates the First Amendment. This year’s gathering, attended by Trump for the first time since assuming the presidency, was closely watched for its significance.
