A prominent horse racing jockey narrowly escaped a life-threatening incident when her pelvis was severely injured by a falling horse. Sonja Logan, a successful jockey, had a terrifying encounter in 2023 when a group of individuals attempted to steal her car. During the ordeal, she sustained injuries including a broken nose, lacerated lip, and multiple broken teeth just weeks before her scheduled wedding. The perpetrators fled upon the intervention of others, and they have not been apprehended since. Logan recounted the excruciating pain she endured when a hefty racehorse trapped her underneath, describing it as the most intense suffering she had ever experienced.
Riding Jumping Power Two, a horse trained by her husband Tommy, Logan faced a harrowing moment when the horse became startled by something and subsequently fell on her. The incident occurred as the horse reared up at the starting gates, causing Logan to fall to the ground with the horse landing on her, resulting in her crushed pelvis and agonizing pain. Emergency services swiftly responded, providing medical assistance and transporting her to Darwin Royal Hospital before later transferring her to Adelaide Royal Hospital for specialized care due to the severity of her injuries.
The impact of the horse falling on her pelvis was likened to a car crash, necessitating surgical intervention to stabilize her hip. Logan expressed gratitude for surviving the incident, emphasizing how the outcome could have been fatal if the horse had landed differently. Despite enduring excruciating pain and the fear of a potential spinal injury, Logan is currently recovering at home with the aid of a walker.
Looking ahead, Logan anticipates a six to eight-month recovery period, contingent upon her healing progress and rehabilitation. Her goal is to return to horseback riding, acknowledging the varying experiences of jockeys recovering from similar injuries. Following a previous traumatic event where she was carjacked, Logan resumed her riding career, achieving notable successes in competitions despite grappling with personal challenges behind the scenes. She eventually overcame mental health struggles and anxiety by embracing competitive bodybuilding, supported by a network of individuals, including her husband, who have been instrumental in her recovery journey.
