Snooker legend John Virgo’s unexpected passing at the age of 79 has left the snooker community and fans devastated. Known for his remarkable career in the 1970s and 1980s, Virgo achieved a significant milestone by clinching the 1979 UK Championship title and reaching the semi-finals of the World Championship that same year.

However, it was in the 1990s when Virgo gained widespread popularity as a co-host on the television show Big Break alongside comedian Jim Davidson. Renowned as the voice of snooker, Virgo cemented his legacy through his iconic catchphrase, “where’s the cue ball going?” during his commentary tenure with the BBC. His unexpected demise was attributed to a ruptured aorta, as revealed by a close source to the family.

Residing in Spain with his wife Rosie, Virgo’s passing was mourned by his loved ones, including his wife who expressed deep sorrow at the loss of her beloved husband. Fondly remembered by his close friend James Malyon, Virgo’s vibrant personality and charisma left a lasting impact on those around him.

Tributes poured in from fellow snooker luminaries like Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stephen Hendry, highlighting the profound influence Virgo had on the sport and those who knew him. Colleague Jim Davidson also honored Virgo’s memory, reflecting on their shared experiences and the joy Virgo brought to many.

Having relocated to Spain in 2020 with his wife Rosie, Virgo hoped for a better quality of life amid health challenges. Survived by his children Gary and Brook-Leah from previous marriages, Virgo leaves behind a legacy of excellence in the snooker world and a profound impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
