Residents in Mevagissey are expressing strong opposition to plans for more high-end housing on a picturesque clifftop area known as ‘millionaire’s row’. The village, renowned for its beauty and popularity among celebrities, is becoming increasingly unaffordable for locals due to soaring property prices and an influx of second-home buyers.
A recent proposal for up to eight luxury homes near Mevagissey CP School sparked outrage among residents, including former parish council member Garth Shephard. Shephard criticized the plan for targeting the most scenic spot in the village to construct expensive million-pound residences, arguing that Mevagissey’s beauty should be accessible to everyone, not just the wealthiest individuals.
Despite recommendations for approval from planning officers, Cornwall Council’s central area planning committee rejected the development application, citing concerns about its impact on the National Landscape and the lack of affordable housing in the area. Shephard emphasized the need for housing that is affordable for local residents, as the current housing market prices out many working in industries like fishing and hospitality.
The developer, Westcountry Land Enterprises (SW) Ltd, defended their proposal as a response to the housing crisis and changes in national planning policy. They highlighted the urgent need for new housing and emphasized that the proposed development site was a suitable location for family housing, adjacent to an existing housing development and opposite the school.
Despite the developer’s arguments, residents and local officials remain steadfast in their opposition to the construction of expensive clifftop properties, emphasizing the importance of preserving the natural environment and addressing the housing needs of the community. Mevagissey’s charm as a historic fishing village and prominent filming location is at risk of being overshadowed by ongoing debates over luxury housing developments.
