“Viewers Miss Gold Medal-Winning Moment Due to Camera Error”

Published:

BBC commentator John Hunt voiced his displeasure with the camera work of the host broadcaster as viewers missed the crucial beginning of Matt Weston’s gold medal-winning mixed team skeleton run. Weston, in partnership with Tabitha Stoecker, triumphed over two German teams to secure Britain’s second gold medal of the day. However, viewers tuning in to witness the historic moment were left frustrated.

During Weston’s preparation to start his run, the camera shifted focus away from him, inexplicably capturing the Team GB official behind him giving the signal instead. This unexpected move resulted in viewers missing the commencement of the significant sporting event.

Many, including Hunt, criticized the camerawork, with Hunt expressing his disappointment by exclaiming, “Oh, what are they doing, what are they playing at; that’s terrible!” Despite the disruption, Hunt later apologized and tried to compose himself for the rest of the run, stating, “That’s a great start, sorry about the pictures… but Matt’s on his way.”

Weston, who clinched gold on Friday to secure Team GB’s inaugural medal at the Games, became the first British athlete to achieve two gold medals at a Winter Olympics. Stoecker initially clocked in at 1:00.77, trailing the Germans by 0.30 seconds, with the British team running last in the final race.

In an impressive 58.59-second run, Weston secured his second victory of the Games, capping off a remarkable Sunday that also saw Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale claim gold in the snowboard cross mixed team event.

Despite the elation of the win, fans were left disappointed as the live camera unexpectedly cut away from Weston at a critical moment. Following his win, the jubilant 28-year-old shared his feelings with the BBC, stating, “Luckily, I felt like I kind of knew what I needed to do.”

During a joint interview, Stoecker, emotional and grateful, thanked Weston for their teamwork, expressing her shock at their success. This triumph propelled Great Britain to 12th place in the medal standings, with all three medals earned being gold within a span of three days.

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games will run from February 6-22, offering fans over 850 hours of live action on discovery+ via Prime Video. Throughout the games, a £3.99 discovery+ Entertainment subscription will grant access to TNT Sports 2, the hub for round-the-clock Olympic coverage.
