“US Envoy Pushes for Italy to Replace Iran in World Cup”

Published:

A US special envoy, Paolo Zampolli, has called for the removal of Iran from the upcoming World Cup, proposing that Italy takes their place. Zampolli, who is of Italian descent, believes that Italy, with its rich football history and four titles, deserves to participate in the tournament hosted by the US.

The suggestion comes after Italy suffered a significant defeat in a play-off match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, causing widespread disappointment in the country. Zampolli’s proposal aims to give Italy a chance at the World Cup while sidelining Iran, a nation currently in conflict with the US.

The move is seen as an attempt to mend relations between US President Donald Trump and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following disagreements over the Iran war. Trump had previously expressed concerns about the safety of Iranian footballers traveling to the US but also indicated that they would be welcome.

While FIFA has refrained from commenting on the potential replacement of Iran, President Gianni Infantino mentioned that the Iranian team is expected to participate. The uncertainty lingers as the conflict in Iran persists, casting doubt on Iran’s participation in the tournament just weeks away.

Trump has not revisited the topic of Iran’s presence at the US-hosted World Cup since his earlier statements in March. The situation remains fluid, with the fate of Iran’s involvement in the prestigious event hanging in the balance.
