UN Atomic Agency Chief Warns of North Korea’s Growing Nuclear Threat

Published:

The chief of the United Nations’ atomic agency has raised concerns about the rapid advancements in North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, describing it as a significant threat to global stability. Rafael Grossi emphasized the lack of clear insight into North Korea’s nuclear activities, which have notably progressed despite international sanctions.

In an interview with The Telegraph, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency warned of the potential for a new nuclear arms race due to the expanding nuclear capabilities of North Korea and China. Grossi highlighted North Korea’s swift progress in both nuclear weapons development and ballistic missile programs, indicating a concerning trend.

Under Kim Jong Un’s leadership, North Korea has reportedly enhanced its nuclear deterrence capabilities, boasting an estimated arsenal of around 50 nuclear warheads with the capacity to produce more. Recent missile tests, including the launch of ballistic missiles with cluster bomb warheads, have sparked international unease and surveillance from neighboring countries.

Photographs released by the Korean Central News Agency showed Kim Jong Un overseeing missile launches and observing the tests alongside his daughter, Kim Ju Ae. The missiles, described as upgraded surface-to-surface ballistic missiles, demonstrated North Korea’s focus on enhancing its military striking capabilities.

Despite global efforts to ban cluster munitions, North Korea, along with other countries like Iran, Israel, and the United States, have not signed the international treaty. While the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty has been endorsed by the majority of nations, some nuclear-armed states, including North Korea, remain outside its purview.

The escalating tensions surrounding North Korea’s nuclear activities underscore the ongoing challenges in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation efforts on the global stage.
