A 35-year-old ultra-marathon runner, David Parrish from Dumfries, tragically passed away during a challenging 234-mile endeavor in the Scottish Highlands. Parrish, who was nearing his wedding day, was discovered deceased in a remote mountainous region of Kintail while pursuing the Cape Wrath Trail record. The demanding route spans from Fort William to the northernmost part of Scotland and is renowned as one of the UK’s most arduous endurance tests.
Police Scotland confirmed no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, although the specific cause remains undisclosed. Parrish and his fiancée, Jade Lau, were actively preparing for their upcoming wedding, with plans for playlists and speeches in progress. Lau, describing Parrish as lively, humorous, and affectionate, emphasized his enthusiasm leading up to the run.
The couple, who shared a passion for hiking and mountain running, frequently visited the Highlands with their dog, Munro. Parrish had proposed to Lau during a hike in Glencoe, showcasing their love for outdoor adventures. Despite feeling exhausted after a previous completion of the Cape Wrath Trail in 2023, where he emerged victorious, Parrish was determined to tackle the challenge once more.
This year’s run held a poignant significance as Parrish dedicated his effort to his late friend and fellow Royal Marine, Luke Ireland, who tragically perished during a mountain run in 2014. The fundraising initiative in Ireland’s memory, supporting Scottish Mountain Rescue, has raised nearly £40,000. Tributes have poured in from the running community and beyond, honoring Parrish’s remarkable achievements and vibrant spirit.
Parrish, a member of Dumfries Running Club and a former Royal Marine, transitioned to running in his teens. Described as a talented athlete and a beloved individual by his club, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Friends and community members fondly remembered him as a source of strength, positivity, and camaraderie on and off the trails.
Lau, reflecting on their shared experiences and Parrish’s remarkable character, expressed gratitude for the time spent with him. The running community mourns the loss of a remarkable individual who will be remembered for his indomitable spirit and enduring legacy.
