Russian authorities are investigating an incident where a circus tiger broke free during a performance and entered the audience in Rostov-on-Don. The tiger took advantage of a sudden malfunction, escaping its enclosure and causing panic among spectators.
Video footage captured the moment when the tiger leaped into the crowd after the net separating the animals from the audience was lowered unexpectedly. Audience members were shocked as the tiger roamed freely among them, prompting some to flee while others remained in their seats, capturing the scene on their phones.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene with children screaming and adults running in panic as the tiger made its way through the audience area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the tiger was safely recaptured a short distance away from the tent.
Circus director Nikolai Dovgaluk attributed the incident to an employee error and a coincidence, emphasizing that the tame tigers were not a threat to the audience. The Investigative Committee of Russia is looking into potential safety violations related to the incident.
While many countries have banned the use of captive animals in circuses due to animal welfare concerns, Russian circuses continue to feature animals like bears, elephants, and Siberian tigers in their performances. Popular troupes such as the Bolshoi and the Moscow State Circus often include these animals in their acts.
