A mother of two is determined to set a new Guinness World Record by running the Manchester Marathon in a saree in under three hours and 50 minutes. Madhusmita Jena, also known as Madu, aims to inspire women from diverse backgrounds to run comfortably in whatever attire they choose.
Madu, residing in Stockport, Greater Manchester, has a deep passion for running that goes beyond just physical fitness. Her running journey began in 2008 when she was a new mother living in Dubai, craving an escape from the monotony of staying at home.
Despite initial doubts, Madu joined a running group and quickly found herself running longer distances than expected. Within months, she completed her first half-marathon and a month later, her first full marathon while still nursing her infant son.
Now 46, Madu has an impressive running record, including multiple marathons and ultramarathons. As she prepares for her 42nd marathon, aiming to break the current record, she emphasizes the importance of women prioritizing self-care and physical health.
Madu’s dedication extends beyond personal achievements. She is fundraising for Heaton School, a special needs school in Stockport where she teaches, to provide eye-gaze devices for students with severe learning difficulties.
Running in a saree, a traditional South Asian garment, Madu faces unique challenges but remains focused on promoting inclusivity and empowerment for women of all backgrounds in the running community.
