“Pope Criticizes US Plan to Expand Death Penalty Methods”

Published:

The recent announcement by the US Department of Justice to expand the use of federal death penalty methods, including firing squads, has drawn criticism from Pope Leo. The Department stated its intention to reinstate various execution methods, such as the lethal injection protocol using pentobarbital and adding the firing squad option.

In response, Pope Leo emphasized the sanctity of human life, urging for the abolition of the death penalty in the United States and globally. Expressing support for those advocating against capital punishment, he urged for greater respect for human dignity.

Additionally, the Department of Justice mentioned its plans to expedite death penalty cases, rescinding the previous moratorium on federal executions and approving seeking death sentences for several defendants. Former President Donald Trump had previously expressed a commitment to pursuing federal death sentences, emphasizing the availability of lethal injection drugs.
