“Mother’s Journey: Empowering Child’s Allergies”

Published:

Authored by Morgan Klachefsky, a resident of Winnipeg, this personal account sheds light on the challenges faced with severe allergies. For more stories like this, visit the FAQ section.

When my son Simon was 18 months old, I unknowingly gave him a cashew, leading to a sudden emergency. Rushing to the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department, we discovered his severe allergic reaction with his throat closing up due to cashews and pistachios.

Following the incident, the reality of his life-threatening allergies sank in, prompting me to educate myself and those around us to safeguard Simon from potential allergen exposure. Despite extensive preparation and knowledge, fear initially gripped me, hindering my ability to entrust others with Simon’s well-being beyond my husband and me.

Grasping for control over Simon’s safety, I gradually learned to relinquish my fears and embrace trust in others. Over time, Simon’s resilience inspired me to prioritize my mental well-being, realizing that my overbearing nature was counterproductive.

Transitioning from overprotectiveness, I empowered Simon to manage his allergies independently, instilling in him the necessary skills and knowledge for self-care. As he matures, Simon assumes greater responsibility for his safety, a crucial step towards his self-reliance.

Empowering Independence

Empowering Simon with knowledge and trust, we navigated milestones like his first solo social outings, emphasizing communication and preparedness. Encouraging open dialogue about his allergies with peers and their families fostered a supportive environment.

As Simon ventured to sleepaway camp, a significant test of trust and independence, our family embraced the challenge, acknowledging the importance of gradual autonomy despite lingering apprehensions.
