“Mother Slams School Over ‘Army Inspection’ Uniform Dispute”

Published:

A mother expressed anger when her 8-year-old daughter was sent home from school over a uniform dispute that she likened to an ‘Army inspection’.

Amaya Davies was turned away from St Paul’s CE Primary School in Salford, Greater Manchester, on Monday after the Easter break due to her footwear not meeting the new all-black shoes requirement introduced in the updated uniform policy. This policy change, including ties for Year 6 students, had been communicated to parents beforehand.

Despite informing the school about Amaya’s sensory difficulties that make wearing shoes distressing, her mother, Gemma Sharples, claimed that the school did not adequately address these concerns. Gemma highlighted the lack of reasonable adjustments and meaningful consultation with parents regarding the uniform changes.

In a formal complaint to the school, Gemma described the incident as deeply concerning and criticized the school’s handling of the situation, emphasizing the emotional distress it caused Amaya. She also raised issues about the school’s lack of compassion, professional judgment, and failure to accommodate a child with specific needs.

Gemma mentioned that other children, including those with upcoming exams, were also turned away in a manner she likened to an ‘Army inspection line-up’, causing distress among students and parents. She called the enforcement of the uniform policy excessive and out of touch with families’ realities.

Following the incident, Gemma sought explanations from the school regarding the lack of response to her emails and why reasonable adjustments were not made for Amaya. She demanded assurance that her daughter would not be excluded from education due to her additional needs.

The school, in a newsletter dated April 2, outlined the revised uniform expectations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards to create a positive learning environment. The school assured parents that children arriving in non-compliant uniforms would be provided with spare items to align with the dress code.

Despite Gemma’s claims of not being offered alternative footwear for Amaya, the Mirror reached out to Vantage CE Academies for their response.
