Jon Kortmansky was traveling for work when his wife, Lori, stumbled upon their ideal home. Enchanted by a one-bedroom apartment in New York’s Upper East Side with striking dark wooden floors, Lori placed the winning bid in 2005 before Jon had seen it.
Recalling Lori’s immediate connection to the apartment, Jon described her passion for transforming it into a unique space. A decade later, the couple purchased the adjacent unit, merged them into a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home with a spacious 240-square-foot balcony.
Jon, 57, reflected on their fulfilling life together, filled with travels due to his legal career and frequent winter skiing adventures. Amid their bustling lifestyle, Lori, Jon’s college sweetheart, had kept a poignant secret – battling brain cancer since her 20s.
Their love story began at Indiana University, evolving from friends to partners. Jon fondly remembered Lori’s infectious smile and optimistic outlook on life. Two years into their marriage at 25, Lori’s health started deteriorating, leading to a devastating diagnosis of a large malignant brain tumor.
Despite numerous recurrences, surgeries, and treatments, Lori bravely faced her illness with resilience, concealing her struggles from most friends and clients. Establishing her business, mastering French, and exploring the world, Lori embraced life to the fullest, even as her health declined.
After Lori’s passing at 51 in 2021, Jon devoted himself to her care during her final months, enduring physical and emotional challenges. The financial strain and emotional toll were immense, but Jon tirelessly juggled caregiving with his legal responsibilities.
Following Lori’s death, Jon grappled with grief and haunting memories in their home, prompting him to seek a fresh start. With guidance from his sister, he embarked on a new chapter, eventually finding solace in a new home that brought relief from his anguish.
Transitioning to his new residence, Jon found peace, letting go of the past while cherishing memories of Lori. Embracing life once more, he ventured into dating, forged new friendships, and reclaimed his happiness, honoring Lori’s spirit by moving forward.
