Longtime voice of Calgary Flames radio broadcasts, Peter Maher, has passed away at the age of 79. Maher served as the team’s play-by-play commentator for 33 consecutive seasons starting in 1980. Known for his iconic catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”, Maher’s passion and dedication were revered by Flames fans throughout his hall-of-fame career, which included the team’s Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their finals appearance in 2004.

Upon his retirement following the 2013-14 NHL season, the Calgary Flames expressed their condolences, acknowledging Maher’s enduring impact on the franchise and its supporters. Maher’s presence in the broadcast booth was more than just a voice; he was a cherished ambassador for the team, the community, and the game itself, touching the lives of many with his warmth and generosity.

Hailing from Campbellton, N.B., Maher’s journey to Calgary in 1980 marked a pivotal moment in his career. Transitioning from calling Toronto Maple Leafs games to becoming the official voice of the Flames, Maher embraced his role with enthusiasm and professionalism. Rob Kerr, who shared the press box with Maher for years, remembered him as a remarkable storyteller who took his responsibility to Flames fans seriously, especially during the era when radio broadcasts were essential for following the team.

Maher’s legacy extended beyond the Flames, as he also covered NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the Canadian men’s hockey team at the 2010 Winter Olympics. His exceptional contributions to hockey broadcasting led to his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award. Even after retirement, Maher’s influence continued, with the Scotiabank Saddledome naming its broadcast booth in his honor and the establishment of an annual award in Calgary recognizing players who embody Maher’s values of sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
