The loved ones of a young man from Lanarkshire, who endured a life-altering brain injury at the age of 17, have successfully raised over £21,000 to support his needs. Debbie Dixon shared that her son, Daniel, now 22, was known as the “class clown” before a tragic incident in 2020 when he was hit by a car while biking home from his girlfriend’s place in Blantyre at a speed of 60 miles per hour. Recalling the night of the accident, Debbie mentioned being startled by the police knocking on their door at 3 am and initially mistaking it for a typical teenage mischief.
Daniel was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s head injury unit following the collision, where it became evident to his parents, Debbie and Thomas, the severity of his condition. Despite no other bodily injuries, the impact was solely on his head, necessitating immediate medical attention. Debbie vividly described the harrowing experience of seeing her son at the hospital, concealed under a sheet due to the critical nature of his injuries, and having to identify him through his tattoos.
The following period was filled with uncertainty and fear as doctors cautioned the family about Daniel’s precarious state, indicating slim chances of survival. However, Daniel exhibited remarkable resilience through multiple surgeries, including the removal of a significant portion of his skull to alleviate brain swelling. Debbie mentioned that during his treatment, Daniel’s skull was temporarily stored in his abdomen to preserve it, resulting in a noticeable physical change.
Despite being labeled as “unrehabilitatable” by medical professionals, Daniel’s family secured a suitable accommodation in Hamilton where he has been receiving constant care for nearly two years. Financially burdened by the ongoing care expenses, the family initiated fundraising efforts that culminated in a recent event generating a substantial sum. Organized by family friends Andy and Leanne Rankin, the event gathered nearly 400 well-wishers and supporters who came together to celebrate Daniel’s strength and resilience.
The funds raised will primarily contribute to Daniel’s specialized physiotherapy sessions and essential equipment, such as a new shower chair. Additionally, the family hopes to provide him with enriching experiences, including a potential trip to Amsterdam. Debbie emphasized the importance of raising awareness about cycling safety, urging individuals to prioritize safety measures like wearing helmets to prevent accidents.
