Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has introduced its new Joybuy platform in the UK to compete with major players like Amazon. Valued at £30 billion, the company offers a wide range of products including technology, appliances, beauty items, groceries, and more, featuring popular brands like Apple, LEGO, Samsung, and L’Oréal.
Joybuy guarantees next-day delivery for orders exceeding £29 in London and several other cities such as Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Cambridge, serving a population of 17 million. Additionally, the platform provides a same-day “Double 11” delivery service for orders placed before 11 am, ensuring delivery by 11 pm. JD.com has established its own logistics network and will operate distribution centers in Milton Keynes and Luton.
Previously considering acquisitions in the UK retail market, JD.com withdrew from discussions to purchase Currys in 2024 and abandoned talks about acquiring Argos from Sainsbury’s in September last year. The company aims to establish a long-term presence in the UK, relying on its diverse product selection, competitive pricing, and convenient services to attract new customers.
Matthew Nobbs, the managing director of Joybuy UK, expressed confidence in the company’s growth prospects in the UK, emphasizing their commitment to delivering an excellent customer experience. JD.com is also expanding its operations to Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg, following a 2.2 billion euro (£1.9 billion) deal to acquire Germany-based electronics retail group Ceconomy in the previous year.
