This weekend, Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals in southern Lebanon, as reported by the country’s health ministry. This incident marked the most lethal attack since a fragile ceasefire agreement was established in June to cease hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, despite ongoing assaults.
Apart from the aerial bombings and drone strikes, inhabitants and emergency responders in the area have accused Israeli military forces of deliberately igniting wildfires that have been devastating homes, woodlands, and olive orchards in the conflict-ridden region. The situation has left locals anxious about their ability to remain in their homes and raised concerns about the potential return of hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the conflict.
Will Christou, a journalist working for The Guardian stationed in Beirut, has been covering the wildfires and the broader Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon.
